Purple Hair

Here's me with purple hair... What do you guys think? :)
Word of the Whenever:
Purple... Purple robes were a mark of dignity among the ancient Greeks and Romans and were worn by kings, magistrates and military commanders, hence purple became a symbol of luxury and power. It was obtained from shellfish... and the deep color was termed purpura (from the name of one of these molluscs).

Collage

This is a shadow box/collage that I recently did. Yes, it is right-side-up, the bottle is supposed to be on the top. It's fun to make these, and I have boxes of little tidbits and odds-and-ends that I've saved up to make just such art as this.

Skeet and Mango

Adam has forbidden the use of clothing on our cats, but sometimes I can't help myself, at least for a minute or two. Mango was trying to make friends with Skeet by jumping on his back, but Skeet was too disgruntled by the shirt to notice.
Word of the Whenever:
Pigeon's milk. Partly digested food, regurgitated by pigeons for their young, also a nonexistent liquid that gullible children and April Fools are sometimes sent to fetch.

Coming Out of the Closet

Here's a picture of Skeet, taking a nap in my armoire. :D Any time I leave the door open, he's in there. He loves small spaces, especially a blanket tent or a box. He's a funny cat.

Alright, word of the whenever:

Echidna (Greek ekhidna, 'viper'). In classical mythology a celebrated monster, who is half woman, half-serpent and is also mother of the chimera, the two-headed dog Orthos, the hundred-headed dragon of the Hesperides, the Colchian dragon, the sphinx, Cerberus, Scylla, the Gorgons, the Lernean hydra, the vulture that ate the liver of Prometheus and the Nemean Lion...
In zoology an echidna is a spine-covered anteater, allied to the platypus, found in Austrailia, Tasmania and New Guinea.

Word of the Day

I've decided to educate all of your palates, and do a word of the day, or rather, a word of whenever I remember. I will use Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase & Fable, sixteenth edition, revised by Adrian Room. The selections will be random, but interesting, nonetheless.
For today: Limelight

Limelight. A vivid light, giving off little heat, produced by the combustion of oxygen and hydrogen on the surface of a lime. It was tried at the South Foreland lighthouse in 1861, but its main use developed in the theatre, where it was used to throw a powerful beam on one player on the stage to the exclusion of others. Hence the phrase 'to be in the limelight', to be in the full glare of public attention.

First Picnic of Spring

We had our first picnic of spring this last week. It was cold, and getting dark by the time we got there, and the store-bought cupcakes left something to be desired, but it was fun all the same. After all, you can chalk everything up to experience, and uncomfortable experiences are sometimes looked upon with the most warmth.

Panda Goldfish

I've decided that I like painting in oils. It's messy, and takes forever to dry, but that's part of the fun. This is my most recent picture. There really are such things as panda goldfish, but of course mine has some artistic licence applied.

On Being a Dog Bather

Sometimes you have to sit on a dog to make him respect you.

9:30pm

It's that in-between time, where everything is quiet. Adam isn't back from work yet, the cats are sleepy, Mango my lovebird is asleep, and the rats aren't awake yet. The only noise is the sizzle of the chicken on the stove, and MASH reruns that I play almost constantly when I'm alone. I have most of them memorized, and I keep putting them on for noise while I putter around the house.

We live in a tiny one bedroom place, and have limited space. My favorite chair is my moon chair, which I got out of storage a couple of days ago. The cats are thrilled with this new addition to our living room, and they both want to sleep on it. This is a pic of them tussling for position. :) The blanket they're on is a homemade quilt I made a couple of years ago... The first "real" quilt I've ever made. I'm really proud of it, so I'll probably post a better picture later.

My Fuzzy Things

Just so you know what they look like, here are pics of a couple of my favorite fuzzy things in my life: Adam, my husband, and my two kitties - Kreeter and Gypsy.

Crocheted Ripple Blanket

Because my job isn't all that interesting, I've been looking around for something to keep me occupied. I've learned recently to crochet a ripple stitch, and am therefore making a blanket. I haven't ever finished a crocheted blanket before, but I hope that this will be the first.

Invisible Life

Blogs seem to be a way to erase your invisibility to the world, even if the only people to see it are your immediate friends and family. Being invisible isn't much fun for anyone. I enjoy reading other people's blogs, and hopefully, this will be something that becomes special and unique.
My name is Lauren. I'm married to Adam, and have numerous fuzzy children - two cats, two rats, a lovebird, two mice, and lots of fish. I will be using them as the focus for my blogs, as well as my other passion in life - crafts.
